Apple iPod Touch Comparison With iPhone

Apple fans who are looking to buy a new iPod or the iPhone cellphone might want to comparison shop before diving into a two year contract with AT&T wireless.  There are quite a few items to compare so lets get started.

Wireless connectivity is probably the biggest item to compare with both breakthrough devices.  iPhone purchasers get several types of Internet connectivity, EDGE cellular, WiFi and Bluetooth.  The iPod Touch only has WiFi at this time.

Design and size can make or break a buying decision for most people, especially when it comes to Apple products.  The iPod Touch is lighter at 4.2 ounces versus 4.8 ounces for the iPhone.  The iPhone however, is 11.6 mm thick while the iPod Touch is 8mm.

Features on the iPhone as compared to the iPod Touch is the reason why Apple has created two different product lines.  The iPhone has the wireless functionality and the iPod Touch is limited in this area.  The iPhone has a microphone where it may be able to run VoIP software when it become available.  The iPod Touch would be limited as a VoIP handset without an installed microphone.  When a third party hardware company produces an iPod Touch compatible wired headset including a microphone, this will become a non-issue.  Other hardware installed features that the iPhone has over the iPod Touch is the 2.0 megapixel camera and speakers.

The iPhone can only be used with a locked in contract from AT&T wireless.  The iPod Touch does not require a contract for use right out of the box.

Finally, the iPhone uses a version of Mac OS X where the iPod Touch does not.  This may be a problem for iPod Touch buyers as some software released for the iPhone may not work with the device.  The price for the iPod Touch is $299 while the iPhone is $399.  This makes the iPod Touch $100 less than the iPhone with the same amount of flash memory installed.

The comparisons of the two Apple products should help buyers choose either the iPhone or iPod Touch, that suits their needs best. Via Tuaw.
